Finding Treworgey Cottages

Treworgey Farm faces south overlooking the beautiful Looe River Valley in Cornwall, with rolling green countryside stretching to the river and Looe in the distance. The medieval Treworgey Manor burnt down centuries ago but the ancient bakery and stables remain, together with the later Georgian farmhouse, cottages, stone barns (first recorded on the 1840 tithe map, but undoubtedly older) and the pretty Victorian farm-workers' cottages. Adjoining, are Coombe Farm lower down this valley, with a sleepy tranquility of its own, gazing over patchwork pastures grazed by sheep, and Leyland, our latest addition, with just a Farmhouse and adjoining one bedroom cottage, set in their own secluded grounds with an orchard and semi private pool. Treworgey was once a flower farm and today, wild flowers amass on the lane-side banks between Treworgey and Coombe, especially during spring.

Where to find our ideas and advice on the local area

Our Information Room:

Sit back on a comfy sofa and sip a hot cup of tea while you browse the well-organised information in our cosy information room. Just a stone's throw from the playroom, this can be a lovely place to relax and admire the view while the kids play within hearing distance.

Our Information Room is stacked with books, maps, timetables, leaflets and personal recommendations about the area. You’ll also find books on Cornwall and local wildlife, as well as magazines and there’s a sofa to sit and peruse and a log burner to keep you cosy. The DVD library, tennis rackets, badminton rackets and board games can also be borrowed from here at any time and we have Treworgey postcards, a small selection of ‘eco’ products (such as washing powder) and bird seed for sale with an honesty box system. In the far room you’ll find local produce stall stacked with jams, chutneys and other locally sourced treats – again available for you to help yourselves and use the honesty box 24 hours a day.

The Info Room and all the cottages have free WiFi.

Around Treworgey

Something about Treworgey induces a leisurely feeling in many of our visitors. They tell us they spend more time than they thought they would sitting in their garden or by their fireside, just taking in the peaceful atmosphere. There’s plenty to do here for young and old, from a leisurely swim to a game of tennis, a walk or ride on the farm and the surrounding countryside to a cosy evening with a homecooked supper (by us!) and perhaps a DVD or board game by the fire. Childhood at Treworgey is more like that of a generation ago. Time is forgotten, whilst damming a stream, helping with the animals, riding a pony, playing tennis, a swim or taking “afternoon tea” in the wendy house.

Over the Horizon

For those who would like to venture over the horizon, there is plenty to do and see. To help you explore, in each cottage there are ordnance survey maps, numerous booklets and our own information folder with a mass of holiday ideas. Some of the closest or notable places to visit include:

Looe (3 miles), seen from Treworgey in the distance, is a picturesque, small fishing town with river and harbour. Charming by day and night with several excellent restaurants, very good small shops, fresh fish off the quay, beaches, rockpools, sea fishing, boats – (for hire) – includes glass bottom boat and trips to neighbouring fishing villages.

Polperro (6 miles) – famous fishing village, full of life day and night. Breathtaking when approached via the National Trust coastal footpath from Talland Bay and Lantic Bay - two of our local beaches that are most popular with Treworgey visitors.

Fowey (8 miles) – the deep natural harbour is picturesque from every approach. Try taking the car ferry from Bodinnick or the passenger ferry from Polruan. Enjoy browsing the delightful shops and eateries.

Eden Project – a must for all visitors to Cornwall (30-40 mins). www.edenproject.com

Houses and Gardens – Cornwall is world famous for its many wonderful gardens, especially in the spring. The Lost Gardens of Helligan (45 mins) for one. The National Trust also have many, including Lanhydrock (25 Mins) and Cotehele (45 mins).

Bodmin Moor – the home of Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn, the Cheese Ring and Hurlers near Minions. (20 mins).

Beaches – many delightful coves within easy reach.

City lights – Plymouth (45 mins) – destroyed 1941, now a modern city with a history, Drake played bowls on the Hoe while awaiting the Armada. The departure of the Founding Fathers for America.

Truro – Cornwall’s capital and only city. Pedestrian streets, old and modern shops, clustered round the cathedral. An unusually lovely city to visit.

Trains – Why not leave the car behind and walk the three quarters of a mile through Treworgey bluebell woods to our charming, little, branch line station at Sandplace. Trains run from here beside the river to Looe, or back to Liskeard and the London to Penzance main line.
